Make a rich, creamy, and savory gravy that perfectly complements your homemade Swedish meatballs. This simple recipe delivers restaurant quality flavor using basic pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Pinch of salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for one minute, stirring constantly to create a roux. Do not let it brown.
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Add the water, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring often.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
  6. Stir in the heavy cream and black pepper. Heat through gently, but do not boil after adding the cream.
  7. Taste the sauce and add salt if needed. The soy sauce adds saltiness, so check before adding more.
  8. Remove from heat and serve immediately over your cooked Swedish meatballs.

Notes

  • For a thicker gravy, cook the roux for an extra minute or use 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of cold water (a slurry) added at step 4.
  • If you prefer a deeper brown color, use beef bouillon instead of plain beef broth.
  • This sauce pairs well with mashed potatoes or egg noodles if you are not serving meatballs.
