Make the best homemade cosmic brownies with this fudgy, dense recipe that perfectly copies the nostalgic Little Debbie treat, complete with a crackly top and colorful candy chips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for batter)
  • 1/2 cup candy-coated chocolate chips (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Remove from heat.
  3. Whisk the granulated sugar and brown sugar into the melted butter until combined.
  4. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the candy-coated chocolate chips over the top of the batter.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist crumbs attached, not wet batter. This helps keep them fudgy.
  9. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. This is crucial for a fudgy texture.
  10. Prepare the frosting: Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. If the frosting is too thick, add milk half a teaspoon at a time.
  11. Once the brownies are completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
  12. Allow the frosting to set for about 30 minutes before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For the best fudgy texture, do not overbake. The center should still look slightly underdone when you remove them from the oven.
  • To achieve the signature crackly top, ensure your sugars are fully dissolved into the butter before adding the eggs.
  • Store these homemade cosmic brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days.
