Hi, I’m Alex, and I’m so glad you’re here. This Texas Trash Dip is an easy, warm, cheesy appetizer perfect for game day or any gathering. It uses simple ingredients to create a memorable, crowd-pleasing Tex-Mex dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) taco seasoning mix
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chiles, drained (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives (optional topping)
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions (optional topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or a similar sized oven-safe skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Beat them together until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Stir in the refried beans and the entire packet of taco seasoning mix until everything is well combined.
  4. If you are using green chiles, mix them into the bean mixture now.
  5. Spread half of the cheese mixture evenly over the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  6. Top the cheese layer with the entire bean mixture, spreading it out evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining cheese mixture over the top of the bean layer.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the dip is heated through and the cheese on top is melted and bubbly.
  9. If using toppings, remove the dip from the oven and sprinkle with black olives and green onions.
  10. Serve this hot cheese dip immediately with sturdy tortilla chips or crackers.

Notes

  • For a meaty version, brown 1 pound of ground beef or sausage with 1 tablespoon of taco seasoning. Drain the fat and layer the seasoned meat over the first layer of cheese before adding the bean mixture.
  • You can prepare the dip mixture (Steps 1-4) a day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Add the cheese topping before baking, adding about 5-10 minutes to the bake time if starting cold.
  • This recipe is a great alternative to seven layer dip because it is served warm and gooey.
