Make this easy, family-favorite dinner tonight. This recipe uses thick, buttery Texas toast as the base for a rich, homemade sloppy joe ground beef filling topped with melted cheese for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (frozen or fresh)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (or preferred melting cheese)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened (optional, for extra toast flavor)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into the skillet with the beef mixture. Mix well to combine.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the sloppy joe mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to blend. This homemade sloppy joe sauce creates big flavor.
  4. While the meat simmers, prepare the Texas Toast. You can toast it in a toaster, oven, or lightly butter the slices and pan-fry them until golden brown and crisp.
  5. To assemble, place four slices of the toasted Texas Toast on a baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture over each slice.
  6. Top each serving with one slice of cheddar cheese.
  7. Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 1 to 3 minutes, watching carefully, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve immediately. You can serve these open-faced or top with the remaining four slices of toast to make sandwiches.

Notes

  • For an extra savory base, lightly spread softened butter on the Texas Toast before toasting it.
  • If you are planning your weekly meals, this recipe is a great option for quick meal planning.
  • If you prefer a tangier sauce, add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the simmering mixture.
