Make rich, creamy homemade hot cocoa mix using simple pantry ingredients. This easy recipe is perfect for cozy winter nights or packaging as a thoughtful DIY gift in a jar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (use high-quality for best flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder (optional, omit for dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for extra creaminess)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt, dry milk powder (if using), and cornstarch (if using).
  2. Place all ingredients into a large bowl.
  3. Whisk the ingredients together thoroughly for at least one minute. You must mix well to break up any clumps from the cocoa powder and sugar.
  4. For the smoothest mix, pulse the mixture briefly in a food processor or blender until completely uniform. Do not over-process.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to an airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place.
  6. To serve, mix 3 tablespoons of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Whisk until smooth and enjoy your instant hot cocoa at home.

Notes

  • For a richer, more decadent drink, add 1/2 teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the dry mix.
  • If you skip the dry milk powder, you create a dairy-free hot chocolate powder that works well with water or any milk alternative.
  • This mix makes an excellent holiday food gift. Package 1 cup of the dry mix into a decorative mason jar and attach a tag with the serving instructions.
  • Store this big batch cocoa mix for up to one year if kept dry and sealed.
