Set up a self-serve hot cocoa station for your next winter party or cozy movie night. This guide includes slow cooker cocoa, topping ideas, and festive decor to make your event special.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 gallon whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Assorted toppings: marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate shavings, caramel sauce, peppermint sticks, sprinkles, cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  2. In a slow cooker, combine the dry ingredients with milk and heavy cream. Stir until well combined.
  3. Cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is hot and steaming. Do not boil.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract just before serving.
  5. Ladle the hot cocoa into mugs.
  6. Set out your assorted toppings in small bowls or jars.
  7. Provide spoons and tongs for guests to serve themselves.
  8. Add festive signage to label your cocoa bar.

Notes

  • For a richer cocoa, use half-and-half instead of some of the milk.
  • Prepare your toppings in advance to make setup easier.
  • Consider adding a splash of peppermint schnapps or bourbon for an adult version.
  • This recipe is easily scalable for larger gatherings.
  • Think about your meal planning for the event and how the hot cocoa bar fits in.
