Make this creamy French onion dip from scratch using deeply caramelized onions for a rich, savory appetizer perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 45 minutes until they are deeply caramelized, soft, and dark brown. Reduce heat if they start to burn.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Mix all ingredients together until they are fully incorporated and the dip is smooth.
  6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Serve your homemade French onion dip cold with your favorite chips or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, allow the dip to chill for several hours; this deepens the savory taste.
  • If you are short on time, you can use a slow cooker on low for 4 to 6 hours to caramelize the onions.
  • Use full-fat dairy products for the creamiest texture.
