Make rich, savory garlic butter mushrooms in one pan. This easy recipe delivers restaurant-style flavor in under 20 minutes, making it the best side dish for steak or holiday meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound cremini or white button mushrooms, cleaned and halved or quartered
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Wipe your mushrooms clean and slice them into halves or quarters, depending on size.
  2. Heat the olive oil and 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the butter melts and foams.
  3. Add the mushrooms to the hot skillet in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
  4. Sauté the mushrooms without stirring for 3 to 4 minutes until they release their moisture and start to brown on one side.
  5. Stir the mushrooms and continue cooking until they are golden brown and tender, about 5 more minutes.
  6. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Push the mushrooms to one side of the pan. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the empty space.
  7. Once the butter melts, add the minced garlic and dried thyme. Cook for about 30 seconds until the garlic is fragrant. Do not let the garlic burn.
  8. Stir the garlic butter mixture into the mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper.
  9. Cook for 1 minute, allowing the mushrooms to absorb the rich garlic butter sauce.
  10. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the fresh chopped parsley.
  11. Serve immediately as a savory butter recipe or side dish for steak.

Notes

  • For an extra steakhouse flavor, add 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce along with the butter and garlic in step 6.
  • If you want a deeper, richer flavor, use browned butter instead of regular melted butter for the final sauce.
  • Use high-quality mushrooms for the best texture and umami rich side recipe results.
