Make these classic, crowd-pleasing Magic Cookie Bars, also known as 7 Layer Bars. They feature a simple graham cracker crust topped with layers of chocolate, coconut, and nuts, all held together by sweetened condensed milk for a rich, chewy dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup flaked coconut, sweetened
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. This forms your crust.
  3. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the crust layer.
  4. Sprinkle the butterscotch chips over the chocolate chips.
  5. Distribute the flaked coconut evenly over the chips.
  6. Scatter the chopped nuts over the coconut layer.
  7. Pour the entire can of sweetened condensed milk slowly and evenly over all the layered ingredients. Try to cover everything completely.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the condensed milk is bubbly.
  9. Remove the pan from the oven and let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Cooling is important for clean cutting.
  10. Once fully cooled, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the bars out of the pan. Cut into squares.

Notes

  • For a firmer bar that is less likely to fall apart, chill the bars in the refrigerator for at least two hours before slicing.
  • If you skip the butterscotch chips, you can add an extra 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or nuts.
  • These bars are excellent for potlucks and gatherings, offering a simple, impressive dessert without complex steps.
  • If you are looking for alternatives to traditional baking, consider how simple recipes like this compare to structured meal planning systems like a keto meal plan delivery.
