You deserve perfectly crispy sweet potato fries without deep frying. Follow these simple steps for crunchy, golden fries using your air fryer or oven. This recipe guarantees a satisfying texture every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/4-inch thick sticks
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (the secret ingredient for crispness)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Soak the cut sweet potato sticks in a large bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. This removes excess starch, which helps achieve crispness.
  2. Drain the sweet potatoes completely and pat them very dry using paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth. This step is crucial for crispness.
  3. In a medium bowl, toss the dry sweet potato sticks with the cornstarch until lightly coated.
  4. Drizzle the sweet potatoes with olive oil and toss again until evenly coated.
  5. Sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Toss one final time to distribute the seasoning.
  6. For Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (195°C). Place the fries in a single layer in the basket (work in batches if necessary). Cook for 12–15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. For Oven Baking: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Arrange the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (do not overlap). Bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway, until the edges are crisp and slightly caramelized.
  8. Serve your homemade sweet potato fries immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For the crispiest oven-baked fries, ensure your baking sheet is hot before adding the potatoes, or use two baking sheets to prevent crowding.
  • If you are making a larger batch, use the air fryer method, as it handles smaller batches better for maximum crunch.
  • These fries are fantastic dipped in a simple chipotle lime yogurt sauce or a maple-mustard blend.
