I’m Alex, and I believe incredible food doesn’t need to be complicated. Learn the simple technique to make the ultimate crispy air fryer tofu—crunchy outside, tender inside—perfect for weeknight meals or snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil (optional, for extra browning)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Wrap the block of tofu in several layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Place it on a plate, put something heavy on top (like a cast iron skillet or a few cans), and press for at least 20 minutes to remove excess water. This step is key for crispiness.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes or bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the bowl. Gently toss until every piece is evenly coated with the dry mixture. If you want a slightly richer color, drizzle with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and toss again.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Place the coated tofu in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary to allow air circulation.
  7. Air fry for 10 minutes. Shake the basket well.
  8. Continue to air fry for another 5 to 8 minutes, checking frequently, until the tofu is golden brown and crunchy on all sides. Total cook time is usually 15 to 18 minutes depending on your air fryer model.
  9. Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately as a snack, or toss with your favorite sauce for a main dish.

Notes

  • For best results, do not skip pressing the tofu; removing water is essential for achieving that satisfying crunch.
  • If you plan to add a sauce (like honey garlic or teriyaki), toss the tofu in the sauce only after it is fully cooked and crispy.
  • This crispy air fryer tofu is excellent for meal prep; store cooled, crispy pieces in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
