A simple, creamy chocolate buttercream frosting perfect for cakes and cupcakes. This recipe is easy to make and great for decorating.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk, beating on low speed until combined.
  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3-5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  5. If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk, one teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time.
  6. Use immediately for frosting cakes and cupcakes, or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure your butter is properly softened, not melted.
  • This frosting is excellent for piping decorations on party dessert boards.
  • Adjust the amount of milk or powdered sugar to achieve your desired consistency for spreading or piping.
