Make this simple, moist fruit dessert using yellow cake mix and canned fruit. It requires minimal prep and is perfect for potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
  • 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or shredded coconut (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the crushed pineapple, including the juice, evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  3. Spoon the cherry pie filling over the pineapple layer. Do not mix the layers.
  4. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit layers.
  5. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts or coconut over the cake mix layer.
  6. Slowly drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface, aiming to cover the dry cake mix as much as possible.
  7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly around the edges.
  8. Let the dump cake cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • For a tropical dump cake variation, substitute the cherry filling with one can of drained, sliced peaches.
  • This recipe works well as a no fuss fruit cobbler substitute when you need a quick dessert.
  • You can use any standard box of cake mix, but yellow cake mix provides the best flavor balance for this fruit combination.
