- 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
- 1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
- 1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup chopped pecans or shredded coconut (optional)
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Spread the crushed pineapple, including the juice, evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Spoon the cherry pie filling over the pineapple layer. Do not mix the layers.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit layers.
- If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts or coconut over the cake mix layer.
- Slowly drizzle the melted butter over the entire surface, aiming to cover the dry cake mix as much as possible.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly around the edges.
- Let the dump cake cool slightly before serving warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- For a tropical dump cake variation, substitute the cherry filling with one can of drained, sliced peaches.
- This recipe works well as a no fuss fruit cobbler substitute when you need a quick dessert.
- You can use any standard box of cake mix, but yellow cake mix provides the best flavor balance for this fruit combination.
