These puff pastry bites combine sweet caramelized onions, nutty Gruyere cheese, and a spicy-sweet hot honey drizzle for an easy, crowd-pleasing appetizer perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onion and salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes, or until the onions are deeply caramelized and sweet. Season with pepper.
  3. Unfold the puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into 12 equal squares.
  4. Place about 1 teaspoon of caramelized onions onto the center of each puff pastry square.
  5. Top the onions with about 1 tablespoon of shredded Gruyere cheese on each square.
  6. Bring the corners of each puff pastry square towards the center and pinch them together to form a small bundle, enclosing the filling.
  7. Place the bites on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle with hot honey. Sprinkle with fresh chives, if desired.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a shortcut, you can use store-bought caramelized onion dip instead of making your own.
  • These bites can be assembled a few hours ahead of time and baked just before serving.
  • You can substitute Swiss or Emmental cheese for Gruyere if needed.
