Ingredients
Scale
1.5 lb ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
4 slices American cheese, cut in half
6 sesame seed hamburger buns
1/2 cup finely shredded iceberg lettuce
1/4 cup thinly sliced dill pickle chips
Instructions
Make the Special Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons relish, 1 tablespoon mustard, 1 teaspoon vinegar, paprika, and 1/4 teaspoon onion powder. Set aside in the refrigerator.
Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
Season the Meat: Stir in the water, ketchup, 2 tablespoons mustard, 1 tablespoon relish, 1 teaspoon vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. This step is key for flavor development, similar to what you might find when using meal planning services for quick dinners.
Add Cheese: Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the American cheese slices until they melt into the meat mixture.
Toast Buns: Lightly toast the inside of the sesame seed buns.
Assemble: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun. Top each portion with shredded lettuce, a few pickle chips, and a generous drizzle of the reserved Special Sauce. Place the top bun on.
Serve immediately.
Notes
For a less messy sandwich, serve the mixture open-faced on the toasted buns.
