Ingredients
Scale
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal. Lightly grease the paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fully combined. The mixture will look glossy.
Whisk in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
If using, gently fold in the chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. For fudgy brownies, a toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist, sticky crumbs attached, not wet batter.
Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting them out using the parchment overhang.
Cut into squares. For clean cuts, chill the cooled brownies for 30 minutes before slicing.
Notes
To achieve the signature shiny top, ensure you whisk the sugar and melted butter vigorously for at least one minute before adding the eggs. This dissolves the sugar slightly.
For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the butter with browned butter.
