Ingredients
Scale
1 (12 count) package Hawaiian sweet rolls
1.5 lbs cooked, shredded chicken (rotisserie works well)
1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1 cup shredded Gouda or Pepper Jack cheese
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried minced onion
1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a medium saucepan, combine the shredded chicken, BBQ sauce, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the chicken, about 5 to 7 minutes.
Slice the entire package of Hawaiian rolls horizontally, keeping the tops and bottoms connected. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared baking dish.
Spread the saucy BBQ chicken mixture evenly over the bottom half of the rolls.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the chicken layer.
Place the top half of the rolls over the cheese.
In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, dried minced onion, and poppy seeds to create the topping mixture.
Brush the butter mixture generously over the top of the rolls.
Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and the tops of the rolls are golden brown and slightly crispy.
Slice the sliders apart carefully and serve immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, add 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh cilantro or green onions to the chicken mixture before assembling.
If you prefer a spicier kick, use a spicy BBQ sauce or add a dash of hot sauce to the chicken.
These sliders are excellent served with coleslaw or dill pickle chips on the side.
