Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 4 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 4 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Press about two-thirds of the crumb mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  4. In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  5. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust.
  6. In the same bowl used for the crust, combine the remaining 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in the remaining cold butter until crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple layer.
  8. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the crumb topping.
  • These bars are great for meal planning and can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
