A simple and comforting fall dessert featuring tender cinnamon apples topped with a buttery oat crumble. Perfect for a cozy evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of flour, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • For a sweeter crisp, increase the sugar in the apple filling to 1/3 cup.
  • If you prefer a chewier topping, use old-fashioned rolled oats instead of quick oats.
  • This apple crisp can be assembled ahead of time and baked when ready.
  • Consider this a great alternative to meal planning for a special treat.
