Ingredients
Scale
6 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of flour, granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
In a separate medium bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
Let the crisp cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For a sweeter crisp, increase the sugar in the apple filling to 1/3 cup.
If you prefer a chewier topping, use old-fashioned rolled oats instead of quick oats.
This apple crisp can be assembled ahead of time and baked when ready.
Consider this a great alternative to meal planning for a special treat.
