- 8 cups apple cider
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 10 whole cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 2 whole star anise (optional)
- 1 orange, sliced
- Combine apple cider, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise (if using), and orange slices in a large pot or slow cooker.
- Stir to dissolve the brown sugar.
- For stovetop: Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours.
- For slow cooker: Cook on low for 2-4 hours.
- Strain the cider before serving to remove the spices and orange slices.
- Keep warm on the stovetop on the lowest setting or in the slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting.
Notes
- For a stronger spice flavor, you can add a few more cinnamon sticks or cloves.
- If you don’t have whole spices, you can use 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves, but the cider may be cloudy.
- Serve hot with a cinnamon stick for garnish.
- This cider is a wonderful non-alcoholic option for parties.
