A simple and fragrant spiced apple cider recipe perfect for gatherings, made easily on the stovetop or in a slow cooker.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 10 whole cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 whole star anise (optional)
  • 1 orange, sliced

Instructions

  1. Combine apple cider, brown sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise (if using), and orange slices in a large pot or slow cooker.
  2. Stir to dissolve the brown sugar.
  3. For stovetop: Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let simmer for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours.
  4. For slow cooker: Cook on low for 2-4 hours.
  5. Strain the cider before serving to remove the spices and orange slices.
  6. Keep warm on the stovetop on the lowest setting or in the slow cooker on the ‘warm’ setting.

Notes

  • For a stronger spice flavor, you can add a few more cinnamon sticks or cloves.
  • If you don’t have whole spices, you can use 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves, but the cider may be cloudy.
  • Serve hot with a cinnamon stick for garnish.
  • This cider is a wonderful non-alcoholic option for parties.
